Things I Learned the Hard Way (So You Don’t Have To)

Aerial view of a city skyline by a large body of water during sunset.

1. Getting Around

Chicago is a big city, but it’s surprisingly manageable. Most of the main attractions are fairly close together, especially downtown, so walking is a great way to explore.

If you need to go farther, the “L” train is easy to use and gets you just about anywhere you need to go.

And of course—Uber is always a quick and easy option when your feet are done for the day.

2. Where to Stay

If it’s your first time in Chicago, staying downtown makes everything easier. You’ll be close to the main sights, restaurants, and the river—so you can spend more time exploring and less time figuring out how to get there.

3. Let Yourself Wander a Little

Even if you like structure, leave a little space in your day with nothing scheduled. Some of the best discoveries happen when you’re not trying to get anywhere.

4. Take Advantage of the Water

One of the best parts of Chicago is how much the water shapes the city. Whether you’re walking along the lake, sitting by the river, or taking a cruise—don’t skip this part. It’s what balances out the energy of the city.

5. Book Ahead (Especially for Popular Spots)

If there’s something you really want to do—book it in advance. Tours, attractions, and even some restaurants can fill up quickly, especially during busy seasons.

A little planning here saves you a lot of time later.

6. Dress for the Weather (and Then Some)

Chicago weather likes to keep things interesting. Even in one day, it can shift more than you expect—so layers are your best friend. Comfortable shoes are also non-negotiable.

7. The City Feels Different at Night

Chicago has a completely different energy after dark. The lights, the atmosphere, the way the city comes alive—it’s worth stepping back out, even if you’re tired.

8. Neighborhoods Matter

Each area of Chicago has its own personality. Even if you’re staying downtown, try stepping into a different neighborhood—you’ll get a completely different feel for the city.

9. The Pace Is Fast—But Not Unfriendly.

People move with purpose here, but it never feels cold. There’s an energy to the city that keeps things moving, while still feeling approachable and easy to navigate.

10. Give Yourself a “No Plan” Window

Even if you like structure, leave a little space in your day with nothing scheduled. Some of the best discoveries happen when you’re not trying to get anywhere.
