Things I Learned the Hard Way (So You Don’t Have To)

Colorful Memphis sign with city skyline under clear blue sky.

1. Beale Street is best at night.

It’s fun during the day—but after dark is when it actually feels alive. The music spills out into the street, and you don’t really need a plan… just follow the sound.

2. You’ll probably eat more than you planned.

Memphis barbecue is not a “quick meal” situation. Come hungry… and maybe don’t make tight plans right after.

3. Uber/Lyft will be your friend.

Things are a bit spread out, and while some areas are walkable, you’ll likely want rides to get around easily.

4. Sun Studio tours fill up fast.

If it’s on your list, book ahead—especially on weekends.

5. The National Civil Rights Museum takes time.

This isn’t a quick stop. Give yourself space to really take it in—it’s powerful and worth it. One of the few regrets from my trip to Memphis was not planning more time for this.

6. Downtown and Midtown feel different.

Downtown is more tourist-heavy, while Midtown has a more local, laid-back vibe.

7. It’s hotter than you think (depending on when you go).

Memphis heat + humidity is no joke—dress accordingly, hydrate, and trust me on this: get a portable fan. It will save your life if you’re even slightly heat-averse (like me). Message me if you want to know the exact one!

8. Not every area feels the same—be mindful.

Like any city, some areas feel more comfortable than others. Trust your instincts and plan accordingly, especially if you're solo traveling.

9. Follow the music.

If you hear something good, go in. Some of the best moments on Beale Street (and beyond) happen when you stop planning and just follow the sound.

10. Don’t try to do everything.

Memphis isn’t a checklist kind of place. Leave a little room in your schedule—you’ll enjoy it more if you’re not rushing from one thing to the next.
