MEMPHIS HISTORY

Memphis has always had a little something extra going on.

Sitting right along the Mississippi River, it started as a major trading hub—basically a place where everything (and everyone) passed through. And when that happens, things tend to get interesting… and a little complicated.

Memphis played a major role in the civil rights movement and is home to the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968. It’s one of those places that makes you pause—and stay a little longer than you planned.

But Memphis also gave the world some of its best soundtracks. Beale Street still feels alive with music, Sun Studio helped launch legends like Elvis and Johnny Cash, and Graceland is exactly as iconic (and slightly over-the-top) as you’d expect.

And then there’s the barbecue. Memphis doesn’t mess around—dry ribs, pulled pork, and enough flavor to make you rethink your entire itinerary around your next meal.

It’s soulful, a little gritty, and full of stories—and somehow, you can feel all of that just walking down the street.

I ended up loving Memphis more than I expected. It’s the kind of place I’d go back to without hesitation—and plan to! This is one I’d absolutely recommend experiencing for yourself!

FUN FACTS ABOUT MEMPHIS

1. You can still hear Al Green preach on Sundays.
Yep—Rev. Al Green holds services at Full Gospel Tabernacle, and it’s exactly as soulful as you’d hope.

2. Elvis was a regular here before he was Elvis.
Long before the fame, he’d come to Beale Street to listen, learn, and soak in the sound that would shape his music.

3. The Mississippi River is a big deal here.
Memphis sits right on its edge, and it’s one of the main reasons the city even exists (and thrived).

4. Memphis barbecue has its own style.
Think dry-rub ribs instead of saucy ones—and yes, people have very strong opinions about it.

5. It’s home to the National Civil Rights Museum.
Located at the Lorraine Motel, it’s one of the most powerful and important historical sites in the country.
