Wanderlost in Chicago

CHICAGO HISTORY

Chicago carries a quiet confidence.

A city shaped by resilience, it rebuilt itself after the Great Fire of 1871—rising from destruction into one of the most architecturally iconic cities in the world. It became the birthplace of the modern skyscraper, a symbol of ambition and reinvention that still defines its skyline today.

Over time, Chicago grew into a cultural powerhouse—known for its deep roots in jazz and blues, its influence in art and architecture, and its role as a hub of movement, industry, and innovation. There’s a history here that feels layered—present in the buildings, the streets, and the rhythm of the city itself.

Today, it feels alive with possibility. Endless things to explore, a steady energy that never quite stops.

And yet, for a city this big, it never feels overwhelming.

The water, the open space, and the balance between movement and stillness create a rhythm that lets you take it all in without losing yourself in it.

It’s bold, grounded, and constantly evolving—the kind of place that meets you exactly where you are.

FUN FACTS ABOUT CHICAGO

1. Chicago literally reversed the flow of its river.
In 1900, engineers engineered one of the wildest feats in history—forcing the Chicago River to flow backwards to keep sewage out of Lake Michigan.

2. The first skyscraper was built here.
Chicago is the birthplace of the modern skyscraper, changing city skylines around the world forever.

3. There are more drawbridges here than any other city in the world.
Which is why the city feels like it’s constantly opening and shifting around you.

4. Chicago is home to an underground city beneath the streets.
A network of tunnels—originally used for freight trains—still exists below downtown. At one point, they were even connected to major buildings for moving goods unseen.

5. Chicago’s nickname “The Windy City” isn’t about the weather.
While Chicago does get its fair share of lakefront breezes, the nickname is believed to have come from 19th-century journalists who described the city’s politicians as being “full of hot air.”
