Las Vegas feels familiar in a way that’s hard to explain.
It’s everything in excess—a place where subtlety doesn’t seem to exist. It’s bold, loud, and over-the-top—but for me, it’s also a place I’ve known in different ways at different times in my life. I’ve experienced it as a kid, as an adult, on my own, and now through a completely different lens.
It’s also a place I’ve found myself chasing memories in… trying to reconnect with versions of my past that don’t exist in the same way anymore.
It’s a city that constantly reinvents itself—but somehow still feels the same.
Las Vegas didn’t start as the over-the-top destination it is today. In the early days, it was a small desert stopover—but everything changed when gambling was legalized in 1931.
From there, the city grew quickly, and much of that growth was shaped by organized crime.
Mob figures played a major role in developing the early casinos, turning Vegas into a place built on entertainment, indulgence, and excess.
Over time, those influences gave way to corporate ownership, luxury resorts, and the massive hotels that now define the Strip.
But that history is still part of the city’s identity—and in some ways, you can still feel it.
Vegas may have evolved, but it never really lost the edge that built it.
1. It’s One of the Brightest Places on Earth
The Las Vegas Strip is so bright, it can be seen from space. Subtlety? Not exactly Vegas’ thing.
2. Casinos Are Designed to Make You
Lose Track of Time
No clocks. No windows. Everything is intentional—designed to keep you inside and playing longer.
3. Vegas Was Built on Mob Money
Many of the early casinos were funded and run by organized crime. The mob played a major role in shaping the Vegas we know today.
4. Elvis Helped Shape Modern Vegas
Shows
Before Elvis, Vegas entertainment looked very different. His 600+ show residency set the stage for the large-scale performances and residencies the city is now known for.
5. Area 51 Is Nearby
Just outside of Las Vegas sits Area 51—one of the most talked-about (and secretive) places in the world. No, you can’t visit… but the mystery is part of the fun!
